Bonton Farms has been selected as a recipient of a 2021 grant to support the association’s commitment to providing residents with nutritious food, skills training through agriculture, employment opportunities, affordable housing and more. .
After receiving 103 applications from community gardens and farms in 29 states, 55 organizations were carefully selected to receive grants ranging from $ 1,000 To $ 20,000, offering a total of $ 125,000 in financial support to maintain these unique neighborhood spaces. Bonton Farms leverages urban agriculture to nurture the physical, mental and financial health of a neighborhood of 4,600 people each year. Not only does the lush green haven provide fresh food for those who live in a food desert, but Bonton Farms also connects residents to essential resources to help them thrive, including healthcare, paid employment, housing and education. The organization also offers comprehensive and intensive services such as mentoring, counseling resources, transportation, support to help remedy past tickets, fines and reinstatement of driving privileges. The public garden is applauded for its commitment to working with the community to overcome barriers that go far beyond access to nutritious food during the current economic and public health crisis by walking with people to restore lives, create jobs and give hope.

About Bonton Farms
What at first glance appears to be “just a farm” is so much more: Bonton Farms is a transformative and supportive community resource for residents of Bonton, in South Dallas, Texas. The overall goal is to create a sustainable future and to disrupt the cycles of oppression that have kept Bonton from becoming a healthy community. The farm works alongside its neighbors to transform the area and redefine the “normal” to offer everyone a fighting chance to create and define their own life. What started in 2013 as a simple garden plot meant to create jobs and provide fresh food in the middle of a food desert, has now grown into a 1.25 acre farm. In 2016, a 40-acre extension farm was added. In 2017, the Market / Café opened, and in 2020, the Bonton Farms Coffeehouse and Farmers Market opened. At the height of the pandemic, the Farmers Market pivoted to offer online grocery orders and deliveries, generating essential income needed to move the mission forward. Over the years, as the work progressed, the true depth of need in the community became apparent. To solve the fundamental problems presented in the community, Bonton Farms relies on the following essential elements: economic stability, health and well-being, transportation solutions, innovative housing, community development, education and access to fair credit. Going forward, the organization has solid plans to add more safe, affordable and low-cost housing; a comprehensive health and wellness center; and mini-homes and innovative homes in the neighborhood to move individuals and families from homelessness and drug addiction to first-time homeownership.
