On the market: 234 Allen Street
One of Allentown’s most sought after historic buildings has hit the market. 234 Allen Street is home to the longtime Antique Man business.
Apart from being absolutely exquisite, the building also has a very interesting history. It was built in 1892 by Eli Hosmer as a homeopathic pharmacy. But it was in 2014 that I learned from the building’s owner, John Shepherd, that (rumoured) the antique lanterns hanging from the front of the building were among the first in the world to be lit from the inside. electricity (they were originally located at Niagara Falls). This alone is a distinguishing feature that puts the building in a class of its own.
It was also in 2014, when Shepherd was in the process of building two open-plan apartments on the second and third floors of the building. A fire had extensively damaged the building 15 years prior and luckily the damage had been painstakingly repaired. Today the apartments are completely renovated and pristine, just like the rest of the building.
The real estate listing, by Gurney Becker & Bourne, describes 234 Allen Street thus:

Built in 1892 by Eli Hosmer as a homeopathic pharmacy, it displays all of the architectural trappings so characteristic of Allentown’s historic preservation district. Exterior features include 2 cast iron storefronts with cornices on the 1st and 2nd floors, cut stone bricks, brownstone sills/lintels and antique lanterns.
