The Washington County Home requested to change its domain name from washingtoncountyhome.org to washingtoncountyhome.gov at Thursday morning’s meeting of the Washington County Board of Commissioners.

In the application letter, it is stated “The domain name request stems from Washington County Home’s need for an online presence to maintain ‘online services’ to effectively conduct business with constituents and to enhance overall information systems security.”

Bradley Bates, IT specialist at Washington County Home, said the .gov domain is much more secure and “will allow us to have authenticity on the internet.”

A resolution was also passed to allow the county home to participate in the state’s cooperative purchasing program.

“I understand, Deanna (Green, county administrator), it’s just so you have the buying power of the state,” said commissioner Jamie Booth.

The power of numbers, added Commission President Charlie Schilling.

“It just gives us the ability to enter into contracts with the state. States negotiate cheaper rates with manufacturers. It just allows us to get much cheaper services,” Bates explained.

Booth said grants were being sought to support the monthly farmers’ market in Beverly and the weekly market in Marietta.

“That’s our goal…we want more local food suppliers to supply Washington County,” he said.

Fuel prices are exorbitant and that is breaking many trucking companies, he said.

“I don’t want this, personally, to fall on our local farmers… our dairy farmers and others,” he said. “If they can produce it here and sell it here and it doesn’t have to be transported so far, that helps reduce costs. Farmers work on a limited budget, which saves them money, which helps them stay productive. »
