GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – Governor Jared Polis was in Grand Junction today and took the time to sign a new bill, which aims to make housing more affordable and accessible.
The governor signed HB22-1282 The Innovative Housing Incentive Program, which is allocating $40 million in federal pandemic relief funds to help build affordable, innovative new homes that aim to save people money, increase the number of homes available and create jobs.
The governor signed the bill on a parcel of land, just southwest of the community hospital, the site of a future factory called the Mosaic Housing Modular Home Mega Factory, which the developers say will be able to mass-produce modular homes.
“I wanted to sign this bill here, at the site of a future housing mega-factory, the Mosaic Housing Modular Home Mega Factory,” Governor Polis said. “Which will not only help grow homes here in Mesa Trails, but also help continue to produce high quality homes, reducing costs for Coloradans for many years to come.”
Mosaic Housing plans to build multi-unit housing at its on-site factory. In addition to the factory, the company plans to begin building a modular housing community called Mesa Trails.
“This bill will help grow small businesses and create jobs in modular homes, increase the supply of affordable housing, reduce the cost of housing for families for local governments or non-profit organizations” , Polis said.
Drafters of the bill said HB22-1282 would also expand Colorado’s workforce by helping housing manufacturing companies increase their capacity, operations and number of employees to meet housing demands.
