PORT WASHINGTON, NY, February 22, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — After a slight increase in spending in the grilling segment during the first half of 2021, the already extended grilling season continued through the end of the year. “A hobby for some and a passion for others, grilling has developed in response to the limitations brought on by the pandemic,” said Joe Derochowski, Domestic Industry Advisor at NPD. “Elevated pandemic concerns, combined with consumers’ earlier adoption of innovative grilling options and exploration of new outdoor cooking skills, have propelled the grill market to new heights. .”
Almost every type of grill saw sales growth in 2021, but pellet grills stood out, with over 1 million units sold in 2021 and revenue growth of 38% year-over-year. former. The pellet grill market started the year with strong growth which accelerated in the second half. Pellet grills accounted for 18% of revenue for the year for the grill and smoker segment, second only to gas grills, which rose from 44% to 39%. In addition to pellet grills, the portable grill, gas grill and outdoor cooking segments each captured additional market share last year, supporting category growth with over 6 million combined units sold.
Sales of grilling accessories and fuel to support new types of grilling activities also increased. Nearly 13 million grill accessories were sold in the second half of the year alone – a 4% increase from the second half of 2020 – contributing to revenue growth for the full year. Grill fuel sales increased 4% per year; however, this growth intensified as the year progressed, with the fourth quarter gaining 6% in units and 9% in revenue. Charcoal, propane, and wood pellets were the top barbecue fuel types in 2021, but pellets contributed the most to fuel segment growth, with a 17% increase in annual revenue.
The NPD’s most recent kitchen audit study found that 69% of U.S. households owned an outdoor grill in the early months of the pandemic. Since July 2020, more than 21 million grills and smokers have been purchased by American consumers. National Eating Trends data from the NDP shows that the seasonal distribution of outdoor grilling opportunities has spread more evenly in 2021. Summer continues to be the time when most outdoor grilling take place, but the first winter months of 2021 saw a slight increase in activity.
“Convenient and fast grilling options meet new and enduring consumer needs, both at home and away,” Derochowski added. “The grilling industry can continue to grow if it continues to communicate a wide range of consumer benefits, provide consumers with options to maximize their recent investments in grilling, and amplify the current excitement around grilling. “
