Ellah Lakes and Enugu government seal rice processing deal

A Nigerian agribusiness company, Ellah Lakes Plc, has entered into an agreement with the Enugu State government for rice processing aimed at improving food security in the state and the nation as a whole.
The chief executive of the company, Mr. Chuka Mordi, described the agreement as “an important milestone for the company in achieving our strategic objective of diversifying our portfolio and our production base”.
Ellah Lakes said in a statement that with the partnership, he would transform the company and the Ada Rice Plantation in Adani, Uzo-Uwani LGA, into a Staple Crop Processing Zone (SCPZ) in Enugu State. .
This is expected to create as many as 5,000 jobs over the next 24 months, as the company will have the opportunity to establish a feed plant and an ethanol processing plant at the Adani site.
Business post reports that the community of Adani is well known for cultivating and producing rice, but due to poor infrastructure and government support, it suffered from low patronage.
This partnership between the state government of Enugu and Ellah Lakes is expected to change the narrative for good and boost local rice production.
In a statement released Wednesday by Ellah Lakes, a company listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) Limited trading platform, work is expected to begin immediately at Adani.
âEllah Lakes is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with the Enugu State Government, through the Enugu State Technical Committee on Privatization and Commercialization, for the expansion and further development of the Ada Rice company and plantation in Adani, Uzo-Uwani. LGA, in a staple crop processing zone (SCPZ) in Enugu State, Nigeria.
âEllah Lakes will produce and process rice with the participation of over 200 indigenous farmers in the local subcontracting program. Ellah Lakes will also develop a feed mill and an ethanol processing plant at the Adani site.
“The development is expected to create a minimum of 5,000 jobs over the next 24 months, and work is expected to begin immediately,” part of the statement said.
